A mom hoped to keep her kids safe and installed an electric fence around their swimming pool but her in-laws called her out for “child abuse.”
Our children’s safety is the number one priority for all moms out there. We want to make sure that our children are safe at all times, and this may be taken to the extreme every now and then. We know that pools and drowning is one of the most dangerous risks to children, and that too many children lose their lives to pool accidents every year, and one mom wanted to make sure that didn’t happen.
However, her decision on how to keep her child safe did not come without criticism and she took to Reddit’s “Am I The A—hole?” community to see if she really did go too far. She starts off by saying that they built a new pool and she was particularly worried about her youngest falling in, or even a neighbor’s kid who may decided to try and sneak in a swim. She explains that she is in the process of getting a fence put in around the pool, but there is a wait time.

In the meantime, she installed an electric fence. She explains it as the same type of fence you would use to keep goats in a pen. She makes sure to say that it doesn’t hurt you when you touch it, but it would make you jump back. She even tested it herself. She was hoping this would be a good deterrent for wandering children.
Apparently, her in-laws did not think this was a good idea and went so far as to call it “child abuse.” She claims this was her only idea, and it seems to be working. She states that her youngest has touched it and says “ouch” but then will not touch it again. She said he is not acting like it hurts him, that it is just meant to be uncomfortable. She asked the Reddit community if she was in the wrong here.
It seemed like most in the comments actually had moms back and did not think this was “child abuse” in any way. A lot of them explained that they grew up on farms and could vouch for the fact that these fences are not painful at all. Some of them even thanked her for the idea, and it sounds like they have plans to install the same kind of fence around their pools.
