PEORIA (WEEK) – What appeared to be a car wreck, instead may have been a driving gun battle Friday afternoon.
Just before 1:00 p.m. Friday, residents heard an exchange of gunshots. A car then struck a fence, an above ground pool and second fence beyond that. Occupants of the vehicle left the car stranded.
“I’m angry. I’m very angry because I hear that this is related to a lot of the violence that’s going on in town and it does need to stop,” homeowner Rita McCreary.
McCreary says she was sitting inside when she saw the fence cave in, then a car driving into her pool.
“I looked out my window and there were three people that I saw climbing out of the car. They jumped the fence and ran towards the front of the house and crossed the street,” McCreary.
Once police arrived, information officer Amy Dotson confirmed there was a shooting involving two vehicles, causing one to veer off the road.
“Whether or not it was back in forth, or one shooting at the other, again that is what detectives are currently investigating,” Dotson said.
There were four individuals being interviewed for information regarding this incident.
“This is a fairly large area that’s corded off. Officers are combing the area for any possible information or leads or anyone with information,” Dotson said.
McCreary says on a normal day, her family and neighbors would be out in their yards, but they are thankful today was different.
“My neighbors to the other side were sleeping, they work nights. They have a child that’s usually in that yard. So ya, I’m very grateful that things turned out this way,” McCreary said.
“In these times when there’s so much social unrest, these kids don’t understand that their black lives matter, so it’s really hard for me. I’m sad and I’m upset,” McCreary said.
Officers did recover two guns from the scene, but no victims have been identified. If you have any information regarding this incident, officers encourage you to call the Peoria Police Department.
