A detached garage and a large machine shed were totally destroyed by a fire in the 1900 block of South State Street Sunday morning.
A fence surrounding a dumpster at the back of Priority Care, 1836 S. MacArthur Blvd., was destroyed and phone service there was cut. Priority Care, a walk-in facility which is part of the HSHS Medical Group, remained open.
Occupants of two homes on State Street are being displaced because of the fire, Chief Allen Reyne said. There was minor smoke damage to the residences, but City Water, Light and Power crews had to cut power at the utility pole.
Springfield Fire crews were dispatched to the scene just after 11 a.m. after several callers reported the blaze, Reyne said.
Crews used a deck gun from the Priority Care parking lot to put out the garage fire. Hard lines were used to extinguished the fire in the machine shed. It took personnel about 20 minutes to put out the fires.
A crew member was able to drive a vehicle from the garage. The vehicle sustained minor damage.
The fire was ruled accidental. A bag of ash from a cleaned up burn pit was the ignition source, Reyne said.
There were no injuries reported.
